Getting Into Culinary Arts College
I have a few questions about this:
- What does it take?
- What do they teach you?
- Do they teach you about the basics, such as the equipment and the terms?
- What should you know before you take the course?
BTW: I’m posting this question in the cooking section because I know many of you who are in this section have went to culinary school or have taken culinary arts courses.
Thank you in advance!

Culinary schools are usually two year degrees from community colleges or junior colleges.
Q: What does a prostitute and a community college have in common?
A: They both let anyone in!
1) What does it take? Just apply an take the placement test and you’re in. Just as long as you pay for your classes, and you keep a minimum GPA (usually 2.5), then you won’t get kicked out of the program.
2) They teach you how to run a kitchen in a restaurant.
3) Yes, they do teach the basics. Every thing they teach is the basics.
4) You need to know how to read and write. Basic math is helpful, though they will require you to take a math course.
If you have any questions about culinary school or the restaurant industry, please feel free to email me. I’ll gladly help. Sorry my answer was so blunt, but it is true. These colleges except everybody!

Money. That’s all they care about. Then they will make you work in their restaurant for free and then go out and do apprenticeships for no money.
They will eventually hold you up by your ankles and shake you to get any lose change out of your pockets.
at least the one in denver
skip culinary school.
find an apprenticeship somewhere and learn in a hands on approach.
Now, years later as a executive chef, who has done hiring for a major catering company: I would rather hire someone with real world experience over someone with just a degree from a culinary school. Its easier to train you, that to retrain you from all the crap you learned in school.
find an apprenticeship
go to a regular college and get a business degree if you want a degree and skip culinary school. Its simply not worth the money.
